He grew up in a single-parent home with his mother in Oakland, Calif., while his dad got caught up on the streets. He was surrounded by crime, even seeing his uncle get shot in front of his home when Bess was 10 years old. Bess can still remember it to the day. On July 9, 2003, Bess got a call from some buddies who needed a ride. When they got in the car, he didnt ask what was in the bags they were carrying. When his car got pulled over, he found out. DVDs, laptops, PlayStations … all stolen. Bess, then 17,  took the rap and did 15 months in jail when he wouldnt rat out his friends. The overwhelmingly black crowd of kids easily connects with Bess. At 5-foot-10, 190 pounds and dressed in jeans, a casual shirt and some Chuck Taylor sneakers, Bess isnt physically intimidating. Rivera, a former Bears linebacker, was the teams defensive coordinator in the 2006 season when Chicago won the NFC. He was a hot head-coaching candidate at the time, and the Bears long postseason run may have kept him from landing a job. Martzs system, however, regards the position as an afterthought, and there was bound to be tension. Shortly after the lockout ended in July, the Bears traded Olsen to the Panthers for a third-round draft pick, and he has regained his mojo, with 12 receptions for 169 yards, including a game-winning 16-yard touchdown catch against the Jaguars last week. He has publicly disputed reports that he asked the Bears to trade him and says hes glad to be in Carolina. Of course I want to go up there and play well and I would be lying if I said I didnt, Olsen told reporters.• Julius Peppers(notes) and Jerry Richardson: Peppers bolted Carolina for Chicago via free agency in 2010, signing a massive contract, and the defensive end played well in his victorious return to Charlotte last season and later made it to the NFC championship game. So he has already proven his point – but that doesnt mean he still wont be motivated to remind the Panthers owner of his enduring value, especially after Richardsons gloating about the money he spent post-lockout in a belated and ridiculous effort to make people forget how cheap hed been for the previous two years.                     Brian Cushing                  • James Harrison(notes) and Brian Cushing(notes): No, the two linebackers wont be on the field simultaneously when the Steelers visit the Texans. But its fair to say Cushing will have plenty of impetus for inflicting pain upon Pittsburghs offensive players after Harrison said the former NFL defensive rookie of the year was juiced out of his mind in a Mens Journal interview over the offseason. On Wednesday, Harrison told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he wont apologize to Cushing. Thank you, James, for keeping the flames of bitterness burning brightly in advance of this game.• Jim Haslett and the Rams: In 2008, in Hasletts first game as St. Louis interim coach following the firing of Scott Linehan, the 0-4 Rams stunned Washington, 19-17, at FedEx Field. Before the night was done, a report had already surfaced that Haslett was in line to get hired on a permanent basis. But after another upset victory (over the Cowboys) the following week, Hasletts team lost its next 10 games, and he was gone, spending a year in the UFL before resurfacing as the Redskins defensive coordinator in 2010. Last season, in Week 3, the Rams ended a 14-game home losing streak with a 30-16 victory over the Skins. Theres Lewis, the Ravens proud leader, snubbed (in favor of ex-teammate Scott) during free agency when Ryan, Baltimores former defensive coordinator, got the Jets head coaching job in 09; Suggs, the pass-rushing demon who regards Ryan as the coach most responsible for his success yet vowed to give his ex-coordinator a hug and a kiss when we beat the Jets (he also paid homage to ex-teammate Scott by wearing a Cant Wait! Given the way some of Grudens former Bucs players brutalized him publicly after his firing following the 08 season, Id imagine that some of those holdovers who remain on the roster are equally jacked up. I also know Gruden pretty well, and Im sure hes excited about calling a game in the town he still calls home. Sad news in the NFL today as ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced that former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger passed away late Friday night Authentic Hakeem Nicks Jersey Blue at the age of 58–almost one year after being diagnosed with cancer.
